US Has More Oil Spills Than You Think

June 18, 2015

The US has more oil spills than we thought and the number doubled after production increased six years ago.

8,000 “Significant” Incidents

Richard Stover, PhD, and the Center for Biological Diversity counted nearly 8,000 significant incidents, between 1986 and 2014, in records of the pipeline safety  administration. By “significant” they mean causing injury, death, damages exceeding $50,000 in value, a loss of 5 barrels of highly volatile substances, 50 barrels of other liquids or there was an explosion. There have been more than 500 human deaths and 2,300 injuries through-out that period. The number of plant and animal casualties is much higher.

Oil and Gas Co's Disposal of Wastewater Causes Sharp Rise in Quakes

June 19, 2015

Two new studies provide the strongest evidence yet that oil and gas companies have caused a rash of earthquakes in the central United States by injecting wastewater into underground wells.

One study, in Science, finds that the extraordinary increase in quakes took place almost exclusively within 15 kilometres of such wells. The second, in Science Advances, confirms that most seismic activity in one state, Oklahoma, is linked to wells that are used to dispose of huge volumes of saltwater.

Ship Wind-Power Technology Delivers 5% Fuel Efficiency Savings

June 2, 2015

Norsepower Oy and Bore say the sea trial of Norsepower’s Rotor Sail — a new wind propulsion technology for ships — verified by NAPA and supported by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, confirm fuel savings of 2.6 percent using a single small Rotor Sail on a route in the North Sea. With these fuel savings, the technology has a payback period of 4 years, the companies say.

Based on the trials, Norsepower and Bore believe that a full system on Estraden with two rotors has the potential to deliver 5 percent efficiency savings on an ongoing basis. Norsepower forecasts savings of 20 percent for vessels with multiple, large rotors traveling in favorable wind routes.
