Coast Guard investigating oil sheen at BP Deepwater Horizon disaster site

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating an oily sheen spotted in the Gulf of Mexico last month near the site of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill 40 miles south of the Mississippi River, a spokesman said Wednesday. Samples of the sheen taken near the site of the failed BP Macondo oil well have been sent to the service's Marine Safety Lab in Groton, Conn., to determine whether the oil is from the BP spill, said Lt. Commander Michael Wolfe.

A Mississippi woman is facing years in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines after allegedly posing as a federally certified safety trainer in the wake of the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon disaster.

A 22-count indictment, unsealed Sept. 26 in federal court in New Orleans, charges Connie M. Knight, 46, with impersonating a federal employee to entice people to pay her for bogus hazardous waste safety training.

A new study led by Empa gives an up-to-date picture of the ecobalance of various biofuels and their production processes. Only a few are overall more environmentally friendly than petrol.

In recent years, the demand for supposedly environmentally friendly biofuels has increased significantly worldwide; on the one hand, this has resulted in the increased cultivation of so-called energy plants and, on the other hand, innovative production methods for the second generation of biofuels have been developed.

ASTM International Committee F20 on Hazardous Substances and Oil Spill Response has approved several standards for in-situ burning. Latest proposed standard, ASTM WK37324, Guide for Evaluation of In-Situ Burning Effectiveness, is being developed by Subcommittee F20.15 on In-Situ Burning. Proposed guide will help standardize evaluation of burn and produce results that will be consistent among different users, enhancing accuracy and credibility of information.
