The Obama administration on Friday announced first-ever regulations setting strict limits on the amount of carbon pollution that can be generated by any new U.S. power plant, which quickly sparked a backlash from supporters of the coal industry and are certain to face legal challenges.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's long-awaited guidelines would make it near impossible to build coal plants without using technology to capture carbon emissions that foes say is unproven and uneconomic.

Citgo Petroleum Corp has agreed to reduce air pollution and pay penalty to resolve environmental violations at refineries in Louisiana and Illinois, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Thursday.
The company would pay $737,000 as a civil penalty and implement projects designed to reduce toxic emissions over the next five years at its 427,800 barrel per day (bpd) refinery in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and 174,500 barrel per day (bpd) refinery in Lemont, Illinois.

Shelby Township and Ford Motor Co. apparently have agreed to settle a lawsuit over pollution at the site of the former Visteon plant near 23 Mile and Mound roads.
At its regular meeting this week, the township Board of Trustees agreed by a 6-0 vote to accept a recommendation from attorney Robert Huth and settle the legal dispute that has lingered in the courts for 15 months.
Township officials said Ford has agreed to clean up pollution at the site, monitor the area for future problems and pay $50,000 to the township to offset costs of the litigation.

An Anadarko Petroleum oil tank damaged by flood waters has released βan estimated 125 barrels or 5,250 gallons into the South Platte River,β according to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. The spill is spreading just outside the town of Milliken, east of Highway 25 about midway between Longmont and Loveland in heavily drilled Weld County.
Andarko reported the leak to state regulators this afternoon, according to a release sent out Wednesday evening by Todd Hartman with the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. The release did not report how long the tank has been leaking oil into the river.
